20 Year Old Lewis Deck on a New Self Build
We often get asked by potential customers what the life span of our Lewis Deck system is and how long do we expect the galvanised coating to last on the deck.
Well, very close to our offices in Co. Durham we’ve been dealing with a customer over the last few years who can help us prove to people how long the steel actually last for.
In the village of Leeholme, on the outskirts of Bishop Auckland, one of customers has been building his traditional self-build home since 2020.
Before this however he had been researching what systems and materials to use and had come across Lewis Deck on our website and also on our Facebook page. Even though we are the UK stockists of the Lewis Deck system from this he had been able to locate a small number of sheets on Facebooks Marketplace. He purchased these sheets so that he could see up close how the system worked and from this he got in touch with us and we sent him a quote for the remainder of the floor area (approx. 150m2).
We supplied the Lewis Deck in late 2023 and we were informed in March this year that the floor had been installed and as the site was local to our offices if we wanted to make a site visit we could.
So down we popped to have a look around and the first thing we have to say is that the installation was excellent.
As you can see from the above image our flanking strips weren’t used here but the deck has been pushed up to the expansion material without gaps appearing and also the change in direction of the deck had been handled well. All of the long edges have been secured with tek-screws and no gaps are visible through these joints.
The main element of the floor that we were then very surprised to see were the sheets that had been purchased from Facebooks Marketplace.
The deck that we deliver to customers is generally manufactured only a few weeks previously and depending on how projects go we may visit a site that has had delays of a year or more but we were blown away when we read on the these sheets a manufacturing date in 2004. Yes 20 years ago!!
We hope the rest of the build goes well and we’ll hopefully get some more photos as the project progresses.
The Lewis Deck was very easy to install and it was great to surprise Chris and Paul with the age of the old Lewis that I had.
Following on from this we were then asked, completely separately from this, to confirm the total lifespan of our standard Z100 galvanised coating.
The response we got from our engineers was to confirm that in a C1 building (residential) the Z100 coating has a potential lifespan of 136 years.
So, if you look after the Lewis Deck sheets, keep them indoors and in a dry environment they will last more than a lifetime.

Q
What are the Lewis Deck sheet sizes?
AQ: What sheet sizes are held in stock for delivery within a few days after order? A: We stock 2500mm and 1300mm sheets. These are all 630mm wide and 16mm deep. Deliveries are made via the pallet network directly to site. The smaller sheets are aimed at small bathroom renovation projects and can be supplied in small numbers via TNT. 2.5* and 1.3m sheets allow for the 100mm overlap to occur over a joist, with joist centres being either 300mm, 400mm, 600mm, 800mm*, 1200mm and 2400mm*. (*2.5m sheet only) For larger projects we are able to produce bespoke sheet sizes if required, please get in contact to discuss other options for sheet sizes.

Q
Why don't my Lewis sheets interlock like they do in the video?
AQ: Why don't my sheets interlock like they do in the video? A: The sheets have two sides (one printed, one plain), the dovetails on either side are different widths, it is then necessary to alternate the sheets print up and then print down.
QIs this a question?
AIf it is, this is an answer.
